This Weekend's Events (7th to 9th February)

Hi Everyone

I appreciate the following is somewhat off-topic, but my Uncle Les has asked if any of you know any screenwriters out there.  If you do, he asks if you could get them to rustle up a new TV show about a murder detective who drives around in a red mk V Ford Cortina Ghia with a black vinyl roof?  Apparently, he's been trying to sell his for a week or two and not had much joy.

I dunno, the things you do for family, (anyhow while we're talking about Ford Cortinas, my Dad had a mk I and in my humble opinion was a far superior model).  And with that somewhat exhaustive talk about cars done with, it's time to tell you what's happening at the Rising Sun this weekend

On Friday, we have the first TRIBUTE NIGHT of the year!

Anyone who has been to a Rising Sun Tribute Night will already know the deal. Every three months we pay homage to a much-loved band or artist.  Everyone picks a song or two, practices them for a bit, then gets together again on Tribute Night to play them to a crowd - always with fascinating results. The next Tribute Night’s hero is announced at the end of the evening. It’s a simple but winning formula and is silly amounts of fun.

As the Tribute Night train rumbles on through the wild and diverse terrain of popular music.  2020's opening episode of Tribute Night takes us to the court of the original king of rock’n’roll.  ELVIS PRESLEY!

Arguably the single most important figure of 20th-century American popular music, Elvis successfully combined the appropriation of rhythm & blues with the fusion of country, blues and pop into rockabilly and spread the popularity of rock’n’roll throughout the world.

The night is now at capacity, but please send an email to tributenight@hotmail.co.uk to join the mailing list and stay up to date on all Tribute Night doings.

There is no admission fee as such, but donations will be collected during the interval, so please keep some money aside. Suggested donation £5. All donations go to the Rising Sun Arts Centre, which is a registered charity and is funded mostly by its own earned income.

Doors open at 8pm for a prompt 8:30pm start.

Please also visit the Rising Sun's YouTube channel to see footage of previous Tribute Nights.

On a Saturday, we're proud to present .JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH

The earnest quest by a stone sculptor (whose name is not James, as it happens) to sculpt the most perfect 'derriere' ever

But how can a penniless, feral man ever hope to emulate Michelangelo’s David or Eva in the V&A sculpture rooms? And can the sculptor ever convince his girlfriend that such a single-minded endeavour could ever be regarded as highbrow?

Seedy, visceral and wholly irreverent this sculptor's pursuit takes you from deepest forest to Rome, to life drawing classes at The Rising Sun Arts Centre in Reading and on, on, onto the heady heights of getting thrown out of the National Portrait Gallery.

If you’re interested in the artistic process and are not too easily shocked, this is for you.

We're open from 8pm, and it'll cost you £5 on the door, or £4 in advance  from https://www.wegottickets.com/event/490573/

That’s everything for another week, just to remind you that we are, as always, at 30 Silver Street, Reading, RG1 2ST (If you pop it into your satnav, Google or similar, we shall magically appear!)

Have a nice weekend!
