This Weekend's Events (30th September to 2nd October)

Hi Everyone

September appears to be winding to a close just as quickly as it arrived, and October makes an appearance.  The leaves are starting to change colour, the nights are closing in and there are the first rumoured sightings of christmas adverts on the telly.  Luckily, this weekend at the Rising Sun is packed with all sorts of things that are custom-designed to end one month and start another with a bang.

On Friday, we bring you CLUB VELOCITY

Another fine selection of live music for the enjoyment of us all courtesy of Velocity HQ and it looks just so:-

MARK MORRISS
Mark Morriss is a singer songwriter who famously made his name fronting English indie outfit The Bluetones. Mark fronted the four piece over a successful and fruitful 15 year period, scoring 14 top ten singles and 3 top ten albums, whilst touring the UK, Europe and Japan. 

In a case of unfinished business, Mark has now turned his attentions to his solo career. After releasing 'Memory Muscle ' in 2008, Mark has since penned material for a new record. Due for an Autumn release, early demos recorded with long-standing producer Gordon Mills (Ed Sheeran/Newton Faulkner) have sparked great excitement from fans and industry alike. Fans have been treated to a two track giveaway in 'Low Company' & 'Guilty Again' through the official website www.markmorriss.me

Truly ace solo and a capital fellow.  You really don't want to miss this

MATT MALTESE
A Club Velocity (huge) success story.  He has been playing at the Rising Sun since he was 16.The music industry have finally woken up.  He is working with some serious players. His latest single 'Studio 6' was played on Radio 1 several times.  

We think young Matt is a HUGE talent.  His debut album should be a serious statement of intent.

ED LOFSTEDT
Club Velocity legend.  Once based in Reading-now in that Bristol.  A wonderful singer song wrtiter.  A must for any music fan.

On Saturday evening, we have something special from TONGUES OF FIRE

An evening of music by Tim Hill and his 9 piece band Tongues of Fire. Tongues of Fire combine trumpets, trombones, tuba, saxophones, double bass and drums to create a wild and rich music that combines jazz, street bands, improvisation and brass bands. An individual sound both very English and international. The band features local trumpet star Stuart Henderson and some of the country’s most exciting players like trombonist Robert Jarvis, trumpeter Nick Malcolm, double bass player Dom Lash and the extra-ordinary drummer Steve Noble.

Much of the music is inspired by the landscapes, people and worlds of Reading Town, including the evocative paintings, prints and writings of artist Pete Hay, Kennet Mouth where the two rivers meet, the traffic roars and wildlife cries of Cemetary Junction, flint ruins, gas work songs and the wild curate of St Laurence’s John Pordage, accused of bringing the New Jerusalem down into his kitchen and hiding political rebels after the English Civil War.

The main work tonight is a suite called ‘A Landscape of Charms and Machines’, originally commissioned by the RSAC with funding from the PRS Foundation.

The evening is part of a series of events helping mark the 25th anniversary of the Rising Arts Centre and the Reading Year of Culture, drawing on the history of alternative arts, music venues, festivals and events in the town and other ‘hidden histories’

On Sunday, we bring you part two of HIDDEN HISTORIES

As part of our birthday celebrations,  Hidden Histories is a DIY exhibition celebrating The Rising Sun, the world it sprang from and the people that made it happen.

Exhibition 1 - 5pm
Cabaret 8-10pm

The RSAC is asking people to come along and help create the exhibition in the morning so it can open at 12 noon. There will be two floors of the exhibition, one for the wider world of alternative arts and cultural activity in Reading, one for the life and times of the Rising Sun. It will be a celebration in film and video, photos, chats, sounds, posters, talks, artwork and more.

To follow the exhibition in the evening there will a ‘cabaret’ featuring local artists including the singer songwriter Terry Clarke, who has written a beautiful suite of music about his hometown.
