This Weekend's Events (16th to 18th March)

Hi Everyone

When I was about 7 years old I wanted to send a letter to Dennis the Menace and Gnasher in The Beano to tell them how I could never finish my homework because my pet dog would destroy it.  But my Mum said at the time that it was a pathetic and untrue story, so I never sent it in.  Now, many, many, years later, I'm wondering if I could get it published in Viz instead?  (Or maybe even the Mail or the Guardian)

And following on from that, we still have something special for you at the Rising Sun this weekend, starting with Friday and STAND UP CINEMA

Back to the Rising Sun and back to its more traditional Friday slot!

Screenings of the best locally made film and video plus rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems. Stand-Up Cinema is a collaboration between The Rising Sun Arts Centre and Real Time Video. To get your film shown at a future Stand-Up Cinema contact Real Time at info@real-time.org.uk.

Our main feature this month is THE HOLY MOUNTAIN (Alejandro Jodorowsky, 1973)

A powerful alchemist leads a Christ like figure and seven materialistic characters on a quest to the Holy Mountain where heaven and earth meet. A surreal, symbolist adventure about the search for enlightenment in a corrupt and greed driven world.

It'll cost you a paltry £5 on the door.  Short Films start at 7.30. The Holy Mountain starts showing at 8.00 pm.

On Saturday, CLUB VELOCITY PRESENTS!

The third Saturday of the month?  The third Saturday of the month at a certain venue in Reading? Surely that means another helping of one of the best band nights in town.

DEATH AND THE PENGUIN
"Rising post math rock punks - featuring ex members of the Veteos" so says Hamish McDiddy of Practical Tax Avoider Monthly

THE MAKAROV SCHEME
"Local teens (still) hardcore greatness" is the considered opinion of Nigel Ponsonby-Smallpiece from What Tickling Stick

THE KEEP CATS
"Teen pop guitar sensation" is a rather short but concise evaluation from Dicky Mint of the Knotty Ash Examiner

We'll be open at 8pm.  And it'll cost you £7 on the door to get in or £5 in advance from www.wegottickets.com

Finally on Sunday, MILONGA SIMPATICA presents TANGO SELECT

Reading's own highly acclaimed tango band are back at the Rising Sun for another afternoon of live tango music. Playing a selection of tangos and vals, some of which you will recognise and others you may not. Tango Select play tracks which are a delight for dancers and great to listen to as well.

We're open from 4.30pm to 8pm.  And it'll cost you £6 on the door

That's everything for another week, just to remind you that we are, as always, at 30 Silver Street, Reading, RG1 2ST (If you pop it into your satnav or Google, we shall magically appear!)

Have a nice weekend!
