This October we celebrate Black History Month with a series of talks and performances.
Black History Month has been celebrated every October in the UK for over 35 years, and we're joining this year's celebration of Black History, Arts and Culture with some special events throughout the month.
Thursday 1st October – our monthly poetry group will focus on Nubian Poetry, looking at the works of Maya Angelou, Benjamin Zephaniah and other key figures, as well as the chance to write and recite your own poetry. Find out more
Thursday 8th October – Caribbean Arts Discussion returns for an evening dedicated to Caribbean Artistes - art, photography, fashion gallery by local artists and discussions about Year of Culture 2016. Find out more
Thursday 15th October – Discovering Caribbean Names is an evening looking at Caribbean people and place names, heritage and memories. Find out more
Friday 16th October – Stand Up Cinema presents Beat Street, a snapshot of the Bronx, birthplace of hip hop, at a time when hip hop was still about dancing, rapping and graffiti. Find out more
Friday 23rd October – Kadialy Kouyaté – this kora player and griot from Senegal comes to the centre for an evening of music. He tells stories and entertains through an ancient West African tradition called “praise singing”. Find out more
