This Weekend's Events (3rd to 5th May)

A pre-amble was considered, however, if you're reading this on Thursday evening before 10pm and you've got time to get yourself to the polling station, then make sure you go there and vote.  

(Yes, we know there's a lack of political talent not too disimilar to an average episode of the X-Factor... and it depresses us as much as you, but come on, read this, then off you trot!)

On Friday, it's time for TRIBUTE NIGHT

Anyone who has been to a Rising Sun Tribute Night will already know the deal. Every three months we pay homage to a much-loved band or artist.  Everyone picks a song or two, practices them for a bit, then gets together again on Tribute Night to play them to a crowd - always with fascinating results. The next Tribute Night’s hero is announced at the end of the evening. It’s a simple but winning formula and is silly amounts of fun.

The 2019 spring edition of Tribute Night pays homage to THE SMALL FACES, one of the most iconic and influential bands of the 1960s.

In mid-1965, four like-minded mods came together to form The Small Faces, ‘Face’ being a mod term given to the most highly regarded of the mods, and ‘Small’ because all members were shorter than average.  Their career was also short; the band split in 1968, with lead singer & guitarist Steve Marriott going off to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, and the remaining members continuing as The Faces with the somewhat taller Ron Wood and Rod Stewart.  Despite the lack of longevity, The Small Faces were emblematic of a fast-moving youth culture: mod-ish street style peacocks and R&B/soul obsessives, they were young, hip and hyper.

This event is also an opportunity to remember our friend Matthew Farrall, who didn’t quite reach his 50th birthday in May last year.  He was a fan of The Small Faces and a keen supporter of Tribute Night, the Rising Sun, and anything that brings people together to be creative, and he wrote about it all with such a stylish and chucklesome turn of phrase in The Whitley Pump. We still miss you, Matty. 

All donations at this event will go to Whitley Community Development Association (Whitley CDA) to help fund the purchase and installation of publicly accessible defibrillators.

We’ll be open at 8pm for a prompt 8.30 start.  And as usual, there’s no charge on the door, but we suggest you keep £5 or more aside for when the friendly people with hats circulate the room, the bar, the hallway, the porch, the little bit of pavement out the front, and the smoking pen out the back. 

On Saturday, SCARLET VIXENS NERDLESQUE Present: GET TREKKED!

The Scarlet Vixens are back at their original home, the Rising Sun Arts Centre, with a show not to be missed!  Not only that but it's Star Wars day!

And what better way to celebrate than with a show themed around Star Trek!?

Mojo Jones is a troll but she loves to give you the unexpected when it comes to nerdlesque adventures!

You will become the crew of the Starship Enterprise as you explore strange new worlds, encounter surprising aliens and battle for the safety of the galaxy!

Coming in costume welcomed! 

A night of classic Sci-fi fantasy fun and frolics!

Tickets are £8 in advance via that new-fangled www.skiddle.com and £12 on the door. Our VIP package is £15 and includes a glass of fizz on arrival and a guaranteed front row seat with table and nibbles. What are you waiting for?
