Hi Everyone
There’s been one particular piece of conversation that’s been had by everyone with everyone they met, everywhere they went, these past seven days (except possibly Aberdeen…)
“Goodness,, isn’t it hot?”
“So hot”
“Unbearable”
“Really hot”
“Couldn’t sleep last night”
“Me neither”
“Too hot”
“Goodness,, isn’t it hot?”
(… and, I suppose you get the general idea… That reminds me, isn’t it hot?)
In our quest to make old things new, and new things familiar (even weather talk), we have a packed weekend for your delectation at the Rising Sun
On Friday, NOTIONAL THEATRE presents WELL THUMBED
Notional Theatre are an occasional theatre company, presenting stage works (original and adaptations) by Terry Victor. They’re delighted to present Well Thumbed at the Rising Sun prior to its run at the Edinburgh Fringe in August!
The premise of the show is simple: once upon a time when you took a book from the shelf it always opened at the well-thumbed mucky bits!
The Librarian is performed by Terry Victor in this libertine and ribald celebration of historically robust language and subject matter.
Well Thumbed pages from the Bible to D.H. Lawrence by way of Jane Austen’s dirty bits will be riffled for your pleasure.
We’re open at 7:30pm, performance starts 8:00pm prompt. Admission will cost you a paltry £6 (£5 concessions)
Saturday afternoon sees another YELLOW TEAPOT CAFE
The Yellow Teapot Cafe might do everything a cafe might do. In fact it does , you can buy tea, coffee and soft drinks, biscuits, cake and we would serve a beer if pushed. But we are not a cafe we are an event at the Rising Sun Arts Centre and to that end we can provide so much more! It is a moveable feast. It happens every month on the 2nd and last Saturdays between 1 and 3 pm. Like I said, you can find the usual fare but more it is a haven for those who like to look at books and drink tea. We have the beginnings of a little library with picture, poetry and story books for the young at heart. Alongside the aforementioned refreshment we will serve Chinese and Indian teas freely. Also there will be a selection of art materials so there will be opportunity to write and draw as inspired in the gentle creative space. With I hope some background music that will also bring to the fore creative juices. What's not to like?
We're open from 1pm to 3pm...
On Saturday, we bring you FIESTA LATINA
A fun and sociable dance night featuring a mix of Latin dances from tango to meringue, salsa to bachata and all the stops in between (La Rueda is a speciality). Very friendly evening in somewhere that could have been lifted straight out of Cuba. Come and enjoy some hot Latin rhythms.
We'll be open at 9pm and it'll cost you a paltry £6 on the door to get in
Finally on Sunday, something new from OPEN PAGE/OPEN STAGE
A monthly collaborative event, for writers, artists, musicians, and everyone in between! The premise is an extension of the traditional ‘open mic’, however the focus is on words and collaboration.
We want people to come and showcase their art in a safe and comfortable environment, with the aid of the Arts Centre’s beautiful acoustics and architecture.
If you’re an artist, bring your work early on so we can hang it around.
If you write – poetry, prose, songs, plays – bring a piece or an excerpt. Actors – come and practice for auditions!
Some writers lack the confidence to read themselves, so the idea is to have a standby ‘cast’ for pieces with shy voices. If you play an instrument, bring it along! Think of the evening as a cross-creative spectrum jam night. The aim is to build people’s confidence and create something new! And just to meet the brilliant people we might not otherwise know about
We’re open at 7pm and it’s absolutely FREE!
That’s everything for another week, just to remind you that we are, as always, at 30 Silver Street, Reading, RG1 2ST (If you pop it into your satnav or Google, we shall magically appear!)
