This Weekend's Events (15th to 17th July)

Hi Everyone

You know, I was planning a long pre-amble about this week's exciting cornucopia of all things Rising Sun related, but after some consideration/faffing about and basically, life generally getting in the way, I felt it might be better to let this weekend's events speak for themselves...

On Friday, we bring you STAND-UP CINEMA

Screenings of the best locally made film and video plus rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems. Stand-Up Cinema is a collaboration between The Rising Sun Arts Centre and Real Time Video. To get your film shown at a future Stand-Up Cinema contact Real Time at info@real-time.org.uk

This month's main feature is OPENING NIGHT (John Cassavetes, 1977)

American drama written and directed by John Cassavetes and starring Gena Rowlands. Broadway actress Myrtle Gordon rehearses for her latest play, about a woman unable to admit that she is aging. When she witnesses the death of an adoring young fan, she begins to confront the personal and professional turmoils she faces in her own life

Opening Night is as dense and difficult as one would expect from John Cassavetes, but even the director's detractors will be unable to deny the power of Gena Rowlands' performance.  Rotten Tomatoes - a bunch of people who are very difficult to please give it a rating of over 90%  There is no praise higher...

It'll cost you a paltry £4 on the door.  Short Films start at 7.30. Raging Bull starts showing at 8.00 pm.

On Saturday, it's time for BANDORAMA

The third saturday of the month?  The third saturday of the month at a certain venue in Reading? Surely that means another helping of one of the best band nights in town...

BENNET
During Reading's mid 90s band explosion.  Bennet were easily the biggest in town.  They regulary sold out the Alleycat (now Sakura)  They signed to Roadrunner records realesing two somewhat overlooked albums in the process

They are only playing two gigs this year.  Everybody at the Rising Sun are chuffed they want to play here.  (Come on, Gary!  Show some enthusiasm!)

They will be playing the hits such as 'Wanker', 'Mums Gone To Iceland' and 'Someone Always Gets There First'  (And maybe 'Mockney Rebel' if you're suitably well behaved)

BIG ZERO
Not obly are they Zig and Zag plus their cousin Nigel in human form, but also your fave new POP band!  For fans of Devo/The Skids/Weezer/The Cars

DJ SCOTT CARIO
"Highly recommended." so ays Clive Obtuse from Vague Promoter Monthly

We'll be open at 8pm.  Tickets are still available in at £10 advance from www.wegottickets.com.  And there'll be a VERY LIMITED amount of tickets available on the door

Finally on Sunday, MILONGA SIMPATICA brings you TANGO SELECT

A small, friendly afternoon milonga aimed at giving people a chance to dance tango in a relaxed and stress-free environment and this month we bring you live music from Tango Select. Tango Select play a selection of very danceable tangos, vals and milongas. Great for dancers or come to listen and enjoy the ambience and the friendly atmosphere of the Rising Sun. The band haven’t played in a little while so its great to welcome them back for their 1st milonga of 2016!

We'll be open from 4pm-8pm  And it'll cost you a paltry £6. Join us.

That’s everything for another week, just to remind you that we are, as always, at 30 Silver Street, Reading, RG1 2ST (If you pop it into your satnav or Google, we shall magically appear!)

Here's to a great weekend!
