Hi Everyone
Every cloud has a silver lining! While the weather tends to get slightly colder in January, the evenings get brighter. Sometimes at this time of year, the sun rises as early 9.30am and if conditions are favorable it can sometimes set as late as 1.30 in the afternoon. Not only that, but we at the Rising Sun, have a full weekend to be telling you about!
This is a welcome relief as Gary and Hendryx J are noising out the office a little with their flamenco-kazoo fusion take on David Bowie's "Telling Lies" (for those of you who are less familiar with the great man's back catalogue than they claim to be.. that's off "Eathling" otherwise known to some wags as "the scary drum&bass album")
On Friday, we bring you STAND-UP CINEMA
Screenings of the best locally made film and video plus rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems. Stand-Up Cinema is a collaboration between The Rising Sun Arts Centre and Real Time Video. To get your film shown at a future Stand-Up Cinema contact Real Time at info@real-time.org.uk.
This month's main feature is RAGING BULL (Martin Scorsese, 1980)
Scorsese's famed biopic of the boxer Jake La Motta. Raging Bull is a full-blown modern classic. Voted best film of the 1980s in numerous critcs'polls, the film is an intense study of masulinity and La Motta's self-destructive personality. De Niro's performance as Jake Motta earned him an Oscar and the film itself has long since established itself as a modern classic.
It'll cost you a paltry £4 on the door. Short Films start at 7.30. Raging Bull starts showing at 8.00 pm.
On Saturday, it's time for BANDORAMA
The third saturday of the month? The third saturday of the month at a certain venue in Reading? Surely that means another helping of one of the best band nights in town. This month's thrilling instalment is a very special occasion celebrating the birthday of local musical luminary Luisa Garcia and also in aid of Messy Club - a special needs drop-in playgroup for 0 to 5 years started by Luisa and her daughter Emmy
Luisa says "It can be hard being a special needs parent. You can feel lonely and a little bit jealous of the other mums (and dads) at the playgroups, especially if your child isn’t quite as quick to reach some landmarks. Sometimes you end up not going anywhere at all. My daughter Emmy has CHARGE syndrome and I haven’t really found anywhere friendly and fun for us to play. So, we started Messy Club.
There is messy play and painting, as well as activities, special guests and music. There is also the all important coffee and cake available! You can meet other parents while your children make a mess. Parents, carers, grandparents, siblings – you’re all welcome at The Messy Club."
Some of you might know that Princess Beatrice reently attended a Messy Cluband had a great time. Prince Andrew tweeted about it.
The money raised from this gig-will help Lu/Emmy to keep going and purchase paint/paper and other supplies..
The evening's musical entertainment looks like this...
MARK LYONS
There was once a band called International Resque (then they had to shorten it to Resque-after a while-as Thunderbirds told them to)
Their debut single 'Yeah!' (released by Davy Lamp records in 1989) is still a perfect sliceof UK pop guitar greatness
In 1989, International Resque blew the Stone Roses off stage at Majestic (famous Reading night spot-now flats) This has been talked about and retold by many a seasoned local gig goer over the years. Mark will be playing the hits solo.Just him and a guitar.
THE SAND CREEK MASSACRE
Luisa has got them back together and to play again, like last year (they were awesome). This will be their second gig in something like eight years.
Luisa used to be their manager, by the way...
MAKE SHAPES NOT WAR
This is the new musical adventure from Charlie O’Connor (formerly of Screama Ballerina).
HERE ARE THE YOUNG MEN
One man a guitar and a lap top. Aka Jason Applin (lead singer of Reading band Bennett-the only ever indie guitar to sign to the very well known metal record label Roadrunner) shenanagians The lady down the chip shop says "Shouty, angry but great pop ditties"
Last seen supporting Wire at the West End Centre in Aldershot
