Interview: The Scarlet Vixens

The Scarlet Vixens are back this weekend for the first of a run of new shows at the centre for 2017.

So, ahead of the excitement that is their “Girrrls & Boyyys” show, we caught up with Charlie from the troupe. If you’ve ever wanted to know anything about the Scarlet Vixens, here’s your chance…

Rising Sun Arts Centre: In a nutshell, can you tell our readers just who are the Scarlet Vixens?

Charlie: The Scarlet Vixens are an engaging, diverse and multifaceted dance, burlesque and performing arts troupe based in Reading with a penchant for pleasing and teasing!

RSAC: What brought you all together?

Charlie: Myself and one of our other original members took burlesque classes in Reading 5 years ago with Bodymind Dance Fitness. Together with our dance teacher we set up the troupe, after being asked by the RSAC to perform a group routine at one of their festivals. When asked what our name was for the poster, we panicked! So we came up with The Scarlet Vixens and it has stuck ever since.

RSAC: Burlesque seems to have gained a bit of resurgence of late. But what makes your shows so special?

Charlie: Our shows are a true celebration of the beauty of female (and occasionally, male) form. We inject a shed load of variety into our shows too, so we can provide a multitude of different styles – burlesque combined with magic, pole, singing, fire performance, hula hoop, belly dance and so much more. There is literally something for everyone at a Scarlet Vixens show!

RSAC: And what can we expect to see this Saturday night?

Charlie: Expect the unexpected! Some bad language, beautiful costumes, girls being boys, girls in drag and boys being, well, boys! Our audience members always have so much fun at our shows, and our reviews very much reflect that.

RSAC: This show marks something of a return to regular shows at the centre. What is it about the Rising Sun that makes it the right place for the Scarlet Vixens?

Charlie: We love the eclectic vibe there and once the room is dressed; we are transported back to the golden era of cabaret! The Centre is pivotal to the Reading arts community and does so much to help underprivileged people in the area so we are only too honoured to support it.

So, there you have it – if you’re suitably teased for this Saturday’s show, you can grab your tickets in advance (£8 in advance or £10 on the door) and declare your attendance on Facebook.
