The band draws on traditions of New Orleans’s street music, circus and village bands, the sounds of church and chapel, the free jazz marches of Albert Ayler and the cosmic carnival of Sun Ra. The band also play new music by bandleader Tim Hill, The result is a rich, wild and unique sound.

Tongues of Fire was founded by saxophonist and composer Tim Hill in 2004, and features musicians drawn from the worlds of free jazz, brass bands, contemporary classical, theatre and samba. The band was created to play both in the street and concert hall and to make music that can be both adventurous and accessible. A key part of their work is in outdoor theatre shows with companies like Macnas and Rag and Bone.
